Helping Inspire Young Adults with Lupus (HIYAWL) Incorporated was founded on March 26, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia, by Michelle Norwood. Michelle was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic autoimmune disease, in 2019. SLE causes the immune system to attack healthy cells, leading to damage to many bodily organs, including the kidneys and skin cells. While working as an Air Traffic Controller, she discovered that stress can trigger the disease and increase the onset of symptoms.
Michelle experienced constant excruciating pain, severe inflammation, open wounds, delayed healing, and traumatic flare-ups. In her search for ways to make her daily life easier, she realized that lupus affects everyone differently but negatively impacts everyone's lives in similar ways. She noticed a crucial missing element: there were scarce emotional and mental support groups, limited accessible resources, or definitive answers to cure lupus patients. Motivated by her passion for helping others, Michelle was determined to fill this gap by creating a community to encourage patients and families affected by lupus.
HIYAWL was created to enlighten and empower individuals impacted by lupus, making a lasting difference in the world. The organization's mission is to help inspire young adults with lupus by motivating, educating, and providing resources through community outreach programs and activities. HIYAWL strives to provide a safe place where individuals can share their experiences to improve the life satisfaction and happiness of others.
HIYAWL hosts monthly and yearly events to raise funds for lupus research and resources. The organization partners with other organizations to provide unique services to accommodate the lupus community. These partnerships allow HIYAWL to supply resources and support to the lupus community across multiple cities. With a growing network, HIYAWL has access to specialized benefits in various sectors, including physicians, fitness centers, food delivery services, home care, and more. The organization's goal is to improve the daily quality of life for all individuals, families, and communities affected by the symptoms of lupus.
